Choosing a Starlink Plan
Residential, Roam or Priority? The right Starlink plan depends less on how fast you want your internet and more on where, how and why you intend to use it.
Starlink now offers several different service options.
At first glance, choosing between them can appear more complicated than choosing ordinary broadband.
It becomes much easier when you answer three questions:
-
Will the Starlink stay at one home?
-
Will you regularly move it between locations?
-
Will it be used for business?
Those answers will normally point you towards the appropriate type of Starlink service.
Starlink Plans at a Glance
At the time of writing, Starlink's UK personal service page lists the following plans. Availability can vary by address and Starlink can change prices and services, so always check the current offer before ordering.

The important thing is not to choose a plan simply because it appears cheapest.
Choose one that permits the way you actually intend to use Starlink.
Starlink Residential
Residential is intended for personal or household internet at a fixed land based location.
Starlink currently lists three UK Residential options:
-
Residential 100 Mbps – £40 per month
-
Residential 200 Mbps – £60 per month
-
Residential Max – £80 per month
The 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps options are only available in selected areas. Residential Max receives Starlink's highest Residential network priority and maximum available Residential performance. All three currently include unlimited data.
Who Should Consider Residential?
Residential is the obvious starting point if Starlink will remain at:
-
Your main home.
-
A rural cottage.
-
A permanently occupied property.
-
A fixed second home where the service conditions suit.
Residential is not designed for roaming between locations. Starlink states that Residential service is intended for the registered service address and that a Roam plan is required for travelling use.
Residential 100 Mbps
For many households, 100 Mbps is already a substantial internet connection.
It can potentially be enough for:
-
Everyday browsing.
-
Streaming.
-
Video calls.
-
Working from home.
-
Several connected devices.
At the current £40 monthly price, this could be particularly attractive to rural households that have previously been paying for considerably slower conventional broadband.
Availability is address dependent.
Residential 200 Mbps
The 200 Mbps plan provides a higher capped download speed and may suit homes with:
-
Several users.
-
Multiple streaming devices.
-
Frequent home working.
-
Larger downloads.
-
More demanding internet use.
Starlink currently prices it at £60 per month in the UK where available.
Residential Max
Residential Max is the premium household option.
Starlink describes it as its fastest Residential plan and gives it the highest network priority among the Residential services.
It may make sense for:
-
Larger families.
-
Heavy internet users.
-
Frequent video conferencing.
-
Large downloads.
-
Gaming households.
-
Homes with many connected devices.
The current advertised UK price is £80 per month.
Do not automatically choose Max simply because it is the top package.
If 100 Mbps comfortably covers everything your household does, paying for substantially more capacity may achieve very little in practice.
Starlink Roam
Roam is designed around portable personal use.
This is the plan family to investigate if you want to take Starlink between suitable locations for:
-
Motorhome travel.
-
Campervans.
-
Touring caravans.
-
Camping.
-
Nomadic living.
-
Personal travel.
Starlink currently lists two UK Roam options:
-
Roam 100GB – £55 per month
-
Roam Unlimited – £100 per month
Roam 100GB
This can be attractive for someone who travels but does not use huge quantities of data.
Starlink currently provides 100GB of high speed data and then unlimited low speed connectivity after that allowance has been consumed.
That may work well for:
-
Occasional trips.
-
Browsing.
-
Email.
-
Maps.
-
General travelling use.
Heavy streaming and regular large downloads can consume 100GB surprisingly quickly.
Roam Unlimited
Roam Unlimited removes the 100GB high speed allowance and is better suited to heavier personal travel use.
That could include people who:
-
Travel for long periods.
-
Stream regularly.
-
Use several devices.
-
Spend substantial time in a motorhome or campervan.
Starlink currently advertises Roam Unlimited at £100 per month in the UK.
There is, however, an important restriction.
Roam Is Not the Business Plan
This is particularly relevant to APN Connect because many of our customers will be commercial users.
Starlink's current Fair Use Policy states that Roam Unlimited is not permitted for business or enterprise use. Its Residential service carries the same restriction. Priority services are designed for higher demand customers including businesses, government and institutions.
So a family touring in a campervan and a film production company travelling between locations may both want portable Starlink.
That does not mean they should necessarily buy the same plan.
Starlink Local Priority for Businesses
For businesses operating primarily on land, Starlink currently offers Local Priority.
The UK business offering currently starts at:
-
50GB – £30 per month
-
500GB – £86 per month
-
1TB – £156 per month
-
2TB – £296 per month
Starlink positions these services for fixed and mobile businesses, with network priority and business oriented features.
The right allowance depends heavily on what the business actually does.
Local Priority 50GB
Starlink specifically positions the 50GB option towards backup connectivity and smaller business requirements.
This makes it particularly interesting for APN Connect.
A business may have excellent fibre and hardly ever use Starlink.
What it wants is another route online when the main connection fails.
In that situation, a relatively small Priority allowance may be enough because Starlink is only being used when required.
Higher Priority Data Allowances
Businesses using Starlink more heavily can choose larger Priority allowances.
Examples might include:
500GB
A small business with several users and normal cloud based working.
1TB
A busier business with several employees, video meetings and regular data transfer.
2TB
A larger team or operation with heavier internet demand.
Starlink itself currently describes its 500GB option as suitable for smaller businesses with roughly two to four users, the 1TB tier for approximately five to ten users, and 2TB for heavier requirements of around ten to twenty users. These are guidance examples rather than guarantees of what every business will require.
Business Use Can Be Fixed or Mobile
Local Priority is particularly interesting because Starlink currently markets it for both fixed business sites and land mobility.
That makes it relevant to many of the customers we discuss elsewhere on APN Connect:
-
Builders.
-
Project managers.
-
Film crews.
-
Events businesses.
-
CCTV companies.
-
Mobile businesses.
-
Construction sites.
-
Rural businesses.
The plan still needs to be matched carefully to the intended operation.
Global Priority
Global Priority is a more specialist service.
Starlink positions it towards customers requiring extensive international and maritime connectivity rather than normal UK household use.
Most APN Connect customers will probably not need it.
It becomes relevant where someone needs:
-
Extended international operation.
-
Global connectivity.
-
Maritime use.
-
More specialised commercial mobility.
For ordinary UK travel, start by investigating the appropriate Residential, Roam or Local Priority service rather than automatically jumping to Global Priority.
Which Plan for a Rural Home?
Usually start with Residential.
Ask:
-
How many people use the connection?
-
How heavily do they use it?
-
Is 100 Mbps available at the address?
-
Would 200 Mbps comfortably cover the household?
-
Is there any reason to pay for Max?
For many rural households, the important improvement may simply be moving from poor conventional broadband to a useful Starlink connection.
They may not need the most expensive Starlink plan.
Which Plan for Working From Home?
If you are working from your own home and the connection is primarily household use, investigate Residential.
A heavy home user may prefer Residential Max.
If you are operating a business rather than simply working personally from home, check the current Starlink terms carefully because Residential plans are not intended for business or enterprise use.
Which Plan for a Motorhome?
For ordinary personal touring, investigate Roam.
The decision between 100GB and Unlimited then comes down largely to data use.
If you mostly browse, email and occasionally stream, 100GB may be enough.
If your motorhome effectively becomes your home for months and you stream heavily, Unlimited may make more sense.
Which Plan for a Campervan?
Again, personal travelling use points towards Roam.
Campervan owners should also think about:
-
Power.
-
Equipment size.
-
Storage.
-
Mounting.
-
International travel.
The monthly service is only one part of the complete setup.
Which Plan for a Caravan?
A touring caravan normally points towards Roam.
A static caravan permanently located at one address is different and may justify investigating a fixed service depending on eligibility and the current Starlink rules.
Which Plan for a Business?
Start with Priority, not Residential or consumer Roam.
Think about:
-
Number of users.
-
Monthly data consumption.
-
Whether Starlink is primary or backup.
-
Whether the equipment moves.
-
Upload requirements.
-
Video conferencing.
-
CCTV.
-
Large file transfers.
A security company uploading video from multiple cameras has a completely different requirement from a small rural office using email and accounting software.
Which Plan for Backup Internet?
This is one of the most interesting choices.
If Starlink will spend most of its life waiting for your normal broadband to fail, you may not need a huge Priority allowance.
For a business, the lower Local Priority tier may therefore deserve serious consideration.
For a household, the calculation is different because Residential services cannot normally simply be paused and redeployed like a portable service.
Think about how frequently you expect to use the backup and what needs to remain operational when the main connection fails.
Which Plan for CCTV?
For domestic CCTV at a fixed home, the overall household service may be enough.
For commercial CCTV, construction site security or professional monitoring, investigate Priority services.
Also estimate the upload requirement.
Several cameras continuously sending high resolution footage can consume dramatically more data than cameras that only send occasional alerts.
Which Plan for Events and Film Crews?
These are commercial users.
They should investigate an appropriate Priority service rather than simply buying consumer Roam because the equipment needs to move.
This distinction is particularly important for businesses taking Starlink between temporary locations.
Do Not Choose a Plan on Speed Alone
The headline speed is only one consideration.
Also ask:
-
Is the use residential or commercial?
-
Is the location fixed?
-
Does the equipment need to move?
-
How much data will you use?
-
Do you need priority network access?
-
Do you travel internationally?
-
Is Starlink your main connection or backup?
Often those questions determine the right plan before speed even enters the discussion.
Check Your Address Before Deciding
Residential plan availability can vary by location.
Starlink says that if a particular Residential offer does not appear when you enter your address, it is not currently available for that location.
That means two customers in different parts of Britain may see different available options.
Always check the actual service address before making a final comparison.
Plans and Prices Change
This is particularly important with Starlink.
The company changes:
-
Plans.
-
Prices.
-
Data allowances.
-
Travel rules.
-
Promotions.
-
Hardware offers.
The figures on this page are therefore a snapshot of the current UK offering, not a promise that they will remain unchanged.
Always check the current Starlink checkout before ordering.
A Simple Way to Choose
For most people, the decision can be reduced to this:
Staying at one home?
Look at Residential.
Travelling for personal use?
Look at Roam.
Using Starlink for business?
Look at Priority.
Operating internationally or at sea?
Investigate Global Priority.
Then choose the speed or data level that matches how heavily you actually use the connection.
Buy the Plan for the Problem You Need to Solve
There is no point paying for the most expensive Starlink service if a lower plan comfortably meets your needs.
Equally, saving a few pounds each month is poor value if the chosen plan does not permit the way you need to use it.
Start with the problem.
Where will Starlink be used?
Who will use it?
Will it move?
Is it personal or commercial?
How important is the connection?
Once you know those answers, choosing the right Starlink plan becomes considerably easier.
